VIEWPOINTS by The Stoners

Art Reception: Friday May 29th  6-8pm       On View: May 1 -June 30

Both Eric and Leeannwyn consider the viewer when making artwork, hence the show name, Viewpoints. Married working artists and instructors, this is the first time our work has been shown together with an opportunity to pair up images that gives the viewer two options on a similar theme. It was a fascinating journey to realize how many themes did match within two completely diffent mediums of photography and painting. Some work immediately fell together, like Fit and Old Mail, with concept and color. Others were more of a reach but still meet, Fringe and Full of Hot Air color and line/subjects both moving upwards. The four large monochromatic works, The Sound, Bleached, Steps and Predator tone and physical shape ended up being coordinated as a grouping. Photos prompted new paintings, Dock and Low Tide, Fogged and Sunrise in Yellowstone. Paintings inspired new prints from a large archive of photos, Head Above Water and Listen and the inspiration for the entire show, Ever Changing and Follow. When you view our work, please find your own viewpoint on the relationships between the works and to yourself.

ERIC STONER: Eric has been creating works of art in professional photography for over 37 years. For 18 years he taught photography across the country as a Canon USA ambassador. As a widely published, award-winning photographer, Eric asks thoughtful questions, when making photographs. “What matters? When you look at the work, will it inspire you? Will it evoke an emotion? Will it be impactful?” Everyone sees in different ways, but he focusses on the concept that the work should move the viewer in some way. His use of color and composition allows the observer to step into the scene as if they are there. From colorful landscape still-life imagery to still-motion, his goal is to inspire the viewer.

LEEANNWYN STONER: It's all about the line. At Syracuse University I painted large cut wood shapes layered with subject based on where we live and objects that surround us. Gradually shifting to make flat surfaces with wood edges as the contour of the objects. Over the years the shapes needed definition and got glued into place in rectangular format. My more matured art emphasizes the line painted on top of the flat surfaces. With the same visual vocabulary of my youth, taking subject matter and blowing it up into abstraction then breaking it down to retain the most important line and color hints. I sand, carve, scar the surface leaving raw grain of the wood exposed and vulnerable, other areas thick with paint glazes, wax and varnishes create sensitivity. My paintings show confidence in flat rectangular framed format and the title instructs the viewer to share in my line’s deliberate simple boldness.
